Eye Brand  Stag Folder ~ Germany ~ Vintage 1970`s - 80`s

Eye Brand Germany  Stag Folder primarily manufactured between 1960 and roughly 2001 by the Carl Schlieper company.

A comprehensive description of this knife pattern, its key characteristics, and how to narrow down its production era can be broken down below.

General Knife Description
  • Brand / Manufacturer: Carl Schlieper / Eye Brand (Solingen, Germany).
  • Pattern & Form: A traditional slipjoint folding pocket knife measuring exactly 3 ½ inches when closed. Because it features a single blade on a 3.5" frame, it is commonly built on a Sodbuster Junior(Pattern.
  • Blade Profile: Typically features a manual-opening Clip Point.
  • Steel Construction: The blade is crafted from legendary Hammer Forged Solingen steel (most vintage models used C75 high-carbon steel, though some late 20th-century runs used Solingen stainless steel). The hammer-forging process compresses and realigns the steel grains, giving Eye Brand knives superior edge retention.
  • Handle Scales: Made from authentic Genuine Stag (typically European Red Deer antler) pinned directly to brass liners. The pins are traditionally hammered down flat rather than domed, a signature characteristic of Eye Brand's rugged, work-ready finish.
  • Hardware: Outfitted with brass liners, nickel silver bolsters.

Identifying the Era and Year
Carl Schlieper utilized specific blade etches and tang stamps over the decades. You can cross-reference the markings on your knife's blade to pinpoint its approximate production year:

Production EraTang Stamp / Blade Etch Details
Pre-1970s Features a very detailed blade etch reading "Carl Schlieper / Hammer Forged / Solingen Germany" alongside a prominent "Eye" graphic. The tang stamp often features the word "SOLINGEN" arched over the Eye logo.
1970s – 1980s The tang stamp transitioned to a simplified layout featuring just the Eye logo with rays of light radiating outward, and the word "GERMANY" stamped directly underneath. The blade etch during this era is typically a bold "Eye Brand / Hammer Forged" stamp.
1990s – 2001 Late-production models prior to the original factory closing. These frequently feature the standard "Eye / GERMANY" tang stamp, but the overall fit and finish are cleaner, and the "Eye" shield on the handle may appear slightly flatter or variations of a "Premium Quality" etch can be seen.
