Santa Fe Stoneworks ~ Woolly Mammoth Tusk ~ Sanmai Damascus
Blade and Construction
The knife's performance is defined by its specialized Japanese steel and compact lockback design.
- Blade Material: According to santafestoneworks.com, the blade uses "Sanmai Damascus" (Sandwich Damascus) from Japan. It features a high-performance VG-10 steel core flanked by 16 layers of stainless steel on each side, totaling 33 layers for a rust-free, dramatic appearance.
- Dimensions: The knife measures 3 inches when closed and features a 2 1/4-inch blade.
- Lock Mechanism: It utilizes a traditional lockback mechanism for secure use.
Handle Materials
The standout feature of this model is the use of rare, prehistoric materials for the handle inlay.
- Woolly Mammoth Tusk: The handle is inlaid with fossilized tusk from woolly mammoths that lived approximately 15,000 to 40,000 years ago.
- Material Origin: These tusks are typically sourced from the North Sea in northern Europe or Siberia.
- Color Variations: Due to thousands of years of mineralization, the tusk may exhibit unique hues ranging from white and tan to deep mocha brown or blue.
- Single-Sided Design: Note that this specific lockback version often features the inlay on the front side with a Birch wood back.
Craftsmanship and Origin
- Handmade in the USA: Every knife is hand-fitted and finished at the Santa Fe Stoneworks studio in New Mexico.
- One-of-a-Kind: Because the mammoth tusk is a natural fossil, no two knives share the exact same pattern or color.
