Artist Background
Sam McDowell was a one-time art professor at Princeton University who was introduced to the art of scrimshaw by then-Senator John F. Kennedy in 1955. He is now considered one of the foremost scrimshaw artists in the world. McDowell had a shop on the Ocean City Boardwalk from the 1950s through the 1970s, where he began selling his scrimshaw carvings, eventually concentrating solely on this art form. He established studios in Carmel, California, and Bequia, West Indies.
Features of Sam McDowell Seki knives
- Manufacturer: The knives were made exclusively for Sam McDowell by Kai Cutlery Company in Seki City, Japan.
- Tapered full tang: This construction means the blade and handle are a single piece of steel, providing superior strength and balance. The tapered feature reduces weight towards the end of the tang.
- White micarta handle: Micarta is a durable composite material often made from resin and linen. The white micarta on these specific knives makes them highly recognizable.
- Custom artwork: Sam McDowell was known for his scrimshaw, a technique of hand-engraving designs. While some knives were sold as a blank canvas, many feature his original, hand-engraved artwork.
