Randall Model 2-5" (Letter Opener / Boot Dagger) Vintage 1965 – 1969 Era

Randall Model 2-5" (Letter Opener / Boot Dagger) paired with an original Maurice Johnson sheath, manufactured between 1965 and the late 1960s (Vietnam Era)
Here is the technical description and breakdown of the features used to date this piece:

Year Made Estimate: 1965 – 1969
The primary indicator for dating this knife is the combination of the 5-spacer stack and the Maurice Johnson "Rough Back" sheath with no stone pouch:
  • The Sheath (1965–Late 1960s): Maurice Johnson became the sole sheath maker for Randall in early 1965. The unlined, un-buffed "Rough Back" style leather was standard for Johnson during the Vietnam War period.
  • No Stone Pouch: For narrow or short-bladed knives like the 5-inch Model 2, Johnson produced "Model A" sheaths without a sharpening stone pocket because the sheath body was too narrow to accommodate one.
  • 5 Spacers: Randall transitioned from 7 spacers to a 5-spacer configuration (typically Red/White/Blue or Red/Blue/Black variations) around 1964–1965, aligning perfectly with the introduction of Johnson's rough-back sheaths.

Product Description
  • The Blade: A 5-inch double-edged dagger blade hand-forged from Carbon Steel (O-1 tool steel). It features a central spine running down to a sharp tip, tapering from a 3/16" thick blade stock. Because it is carbon steel, older models often exhibit a natural dark patina or faint carbon spotting if stored over time.
  • The Hilt: A double brass hilt (crossguard) providing top and bottom hand protection.
  • The Handle: A stacked leather washer grip that has been shaped, sanded, and polished down to a smooth finish.
  • The Spacers: Distinctly finished with 5 spacers flanking the guard and butt cap, which serves as a landmark signature for mid-to-late 1960s Randall build styles.
  • The Butt Cap: Usually paired with a standard duralumin (aluminum) or brass butt cap holding the hidden tang construction together.

  • Never used, carried or sharpened
  • Original Johnson "Rough Back" sheath
  • Condition is near mint to mint

NKCA Grading system

MINT: A factory fresh knife, absolutely original as it came from the manufacturer, not carried or sharpened, a perfect knife.

NEAR MINT: A new knife that has seen sometimes, show some slight carry or shop wear, blades snap perfectly, handles show no cracks.

EXCELLENT: Shows no more than 10% blade wear, handles are sound, no cracks, blades snap good.

VERY GOOD: About 25% blade wear, slight cracks in handles, may have one lazy blade, stamping clearly visible to the naked eye, no blades changed or repaired.

FAIR: 50% blade wear, blades lazy, cracks and chips in handles, handles replaced with same type, blades repaired, stampings faint but readable with a glass.

POOR: Blades very worn, handles bad or missing, blades have been replaced with the same type, reading of the stamp is almost impossible, even with a glass, good mostly only for parts.
