Randall Made Knives Model 3-6 "Hunter" Vintage Vietnam War Era manufactured between 1967 and 1972. Model 3-6: The "Hunter" is Randall's most popular heavy-duty all-around sporting knife, featuring a clip-point/Bowie style blade with a false top edge.
Description
- The Blade: A 6-inch trailing point / bowie-style blade forged from high-carbon O-1 tool steel. It features an upswept cutting edge and a false top edge, which was designed as Bo Randall's ultimate all-around outdoor and big-game skinning knife.
- The Hilt: A standard single hilt made of solid brass.
- The Spacers
- A stack of 7 thin spacers (typically a combination of red, white, and blue or black fiber/vulcanized material) situated next to the hilt.
- The Handle: A premium genuine stag horn handle. By this era, the Randall shop had long discontinued pinning the stag, relying on a clean, solid epoxy and hidden tang build.
- The Sheath: An original Maurice Johnson "Rough Back" leather sheath. Characterized by its unlined, raw suede-like backing, tight stitching, and distinct "baby dot" or plain snaps on the retaining strap and stone pouch.
Determining the Year Made (1967–1972)
Randall knives are famously dated by examining the technical transitions of their spacers and sheaths:
- The 7-Spacer Indicator: On non-leather handles (like your stag handle), the shop used a 7-spacer stack throughout the 1960s and up until 1972. In late 1972 to early 1973, Randall officially transitioned to a "3 thick, 2 thin" spacer arrangement for stag handles.
- The Johnson Sheath Indicator: Maurice Johnson took over full sheath manufacturing for Randall in 1965. The iconic "Rough Back" style became his standard layout from 1965 through the early 1970s.
- The Timeline: The intersection of a 7-spacer stag handle and a Johnson rough back sheath confirms a production window of circa 1967 to 1972, placing it squarely in the Vietnam War era.

NKCA Grading system
MINT: A factory fresh knife, absolutely original as it came from the manufacturer, not carried or sharpened, a perfect knife.
NEAR MINT: A new knife that has seen sometimes, show some slight carry or shop wear, blades snap perfectly, handles show no cracks.
EXCELLENT: Shows no more than 10% blade wear, handles are sound, no cracks, blades snap good.
VERY GOOD: About 25% blade wear, slight cracks in handles, may have one lazy blade, stamping clearly visible to the naked eye, no blades changed or repaired.
FAIR: 50% blade wear, blades lazy, cracks and chips in handles, handles replaced with same type, blades repaired, stampings faint but readable with a glass.
POOR: Blades very worn, handles bad or missing, blades have been replaced with the same type, reading of the stamp is almost impossible, even with a glass, good mostly only for parts.
