Grohmann DH Russell #4 Survival Knife 4s ~ Stag ~ Vintage

The Grohmann DH Russell #4 Survival Knife (often marked R4S) is the largest model in the iconic Canadian belt knife series. The vintage stag-handled version is a highly sought-after collector's piece, distinguished by its unique elliptical blade and "offset" ergonomic handle designed by D.H. Russell. This knife has nice " Fat Stag" scales.

 Vintage Features & Identification
  • Stag Handle Scales: Crafted from genuine shed stag horn, these handles are prized for their unique texture and color variations. Vintage examples often feature older styles of rivets, such as large brass pins or occasionally hammered copper.
  • Blade Design: The "Survival" model features a large 5.5-inch elliptical blade designed to reduce cutting drag.
  • Steel Options: Most vintage models were either high-carbon steel (identifiable by a natural patina) or stainless steel. Older carbon steel blades were often made from European C70 steel, tempered to 56-58 HRC for ease of sharpening.
  • Markings: Look for stamps like "RD 1964" on the tang, which indicates the design registration year and was used on knives produced between 1964 and 1984. Other markings include "Russell Belt Knife Canada" and the number 4.
  • Craftsmanship: Vintage units are often noted for superior "fit and finish" compared to modern mass-market versions, with cleaner grinds and more symmetrical jimping.

NEAR MINT: A new knife that has seen sometimes, show some slight carry or shop wear, blades snap perfectly, handles show no cracks.

EXCELLENT: Shows no more than 10% blade wear, handles are sound, no cracks, blades snap good.

VERY GOOD: About 25% blade wear, slight cracks in handles, may have one lazy blade, stamping clearly visible to the naked eye, no blades changed or repaired.

FAIR: 50% blade wear, blades lazy, cracks and chips in handles, handles replaced with same type, blades repaired, stampings faint but readable with a glass.

POOR: Blades very worn, handles bad or missing, blades have been replaced with the same type, reading of the stamp is almost impossible, even with a glass, good mostly only for parts.
