 Case XX Slimline Trapper ~ Green Bone ~ Vintage 1940 - 48 ~

Case XX Slimline Trapper (Pattern 61048) with a green bone handle and no pattern numbers on the tang can be narrowed down to the 1940–1948 era. During the broader 1940–1964 Case XX manufacturing block, W.R. Case & Sons did not stamp pattern numbers on the tangs of their knives during the initial 1940–1948 production run. Known for its sleek 4 1/8-inch closed profile, authentic pieces from this immediate post-WWII period feature Case's legendary "green bone" jigging and distinct tang stamps that make them a premier find for traditional cutlery collectors.

Specifications & Pattern Details
  • Pattern Number: Historically designated as 61048 (The "6" indicates bone handle material, "1" indicates a single blade, and "048" is the Slimline Trapper factory pattern number).
  • Length: Measures approximately 4 1/8 inches when closed.
  • Blade Type: A single, elongated Clip Point blade designed originally for trapping and skinning but popular as a lightweight daily carry.
  • Handle Material: Authentic Green Bone featuring the distinct jigging or "picked" texture characteristic of mid-century W.R. Case & Sons manufacturing.

Understanding the "No Tang Numbers" Detail
During the 1940–1964 "Case XX" era, Case did not uniformly stamp the full pattern numbers on every single knife that left the factory. Finding a knife with the main "CASE XX" logo stamp but no pattern number (tang numbers) on the opposite side of the blade or on the tang is common for this specific timeframe. Case frequently omitted pattern number stamps on certain runs or configurations prior to implementing strict standardized numbering across all models in later eras.

NKCA Grading system

MINT: A factory fresh knife, absolutely original as it came from the manufacturer, not carried or sharpened, a perfect knife.

NEAR MINT: A new knife that has seen sometimes, show some slight carry or shop wear, blades snap perfectly, handles show no cracks.

EXCELLENT: Shows no more than 10% blade wear, handles are sound, no cracks, blades snap good.

VERY GOOD: About 25% blade wear, slight cracks in handles, may have one lazy blade, stamping clearly visible to the naked eye, no blades changed or repaired.

FAIR: 50% blade wear, blades lazy, cracks and chips in handles, handles replaced with same type, blades repaired, stampings faint but readable with a glass.

POOR: Blades very worn, handles bad or missing, blades have been replaced with the same type, reading of the stamp is almost impossible, even with a glass, good mostly only for parts.
