The 1975 Case XX Buffalo Clasp Knife (Pattern P172) is a highly collectible, oversized folding hunter knife manufactured by W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co.. 
 
 Specifications
  • Pattern Number: P172. The "P" signifies the Pakkawood handle material, "1" indicates a single blade, and "72" denotes the large clasp frame. 
  • Tang Stamp: Features the standard "CASE XX U.S.A." stamp with 5 Dots, which explicitly dates its manufacture to 1975. The reverse side of the tang is stamped "HANDMADE". 
  • Closed Length: 5 ½ inches. 
 
 Description
  • The Blade: A single, mirror-polished large clip point blade made of high-quality carbon or chrome vanadium steel. The front face of the blade features a distinct, factory-etched "Case Buffalo" graphic profile. 
  • Handle & Frame: Constructed with smooth, dark brown Pakkawood scales (sometimes referred to by collectors as rosewood or walnut-colored wood). The handle frame features a distinct upward-arcing "tail bolster" design characteristic of the clasp pattern. 
  • Hardware & Liners: Accented with polished nickel silver bolsters, a pinned Case shield emblem, and solid brass liners. 
  • Packaging: This specific 1970s run was originally sold as a presentation piece housed inside a form-fitting, solid walnut wooden display box featuring a matching buffalo graphic or text.
