The 1977 Case XX 5172 SSP Stag Clasp Knife (frequently called the "Bulldog") is a highly prized, large-format vintage pocketknife produced as part of Case’s iconic 1977 Stag Blue Scroll Set 

• Pattern Number: 5172 SSP. The "5" signifies genuine stag handle material, "1" denotes a single blade, "72" represents the large clasp/bulldog pattern frame, and "SSP" stands for Stainless Steel Polished.
• Tang Stamps: The front tang is stamped with CASE XX 5172 SSP. The reverse features HAND MADE U.S.A. along with 3 Dots, which denotes the exact manufacture year of 1977. 
  
• Dimensions: Measures approximately 5 ½ inches closed with a massive 4-inch clip point blade. [
  

• The "Blue Scroll" Etch: The hallmark of this variant is the distinctive, intricate floral scroll artwork etched onto the face of the blade. This design feature was strictly limited to the special 1977 factory collection. 
• Handle Material: Outfitted with premium, thick Sambar stag antler scales secured with brass pins over brass liners. These handles feature an oval Case shield inlay. Because Sambar stag is a natural material, textures vary beautifully from smooth toasted amber tones to deep, gnarly "canyon" valleys.
• Hardware & Construction: Outfitted with mirror-polished nickel silver bolsters. It features a heavy-duty slipjoint mechanism known for its crisp, aggressive "gator-like" snap upon opening and closing.
