Case 6214 "Jack Knife" ~ 1965 - 1969 ~ Vintage
Case 6214 "Jack Knife" ~ 1965 - 1969 ~ Vintage
- Pattern: This is a "jack knife" pattern, meaning the blades open from the same end of the handle. The "6214" pattern number indicates a bone handle material (the first digit "6") and two blades (the second digit "2").
- Blades: The knife features two blades, which typically consist of a clip blade and a spey blade. The clip blade is often used for detail work, while the spey blade is an all-purpose utility blade. The blade material would likely be W.R. Case & Sons' original Chrome Vanadium (CV) carbon steel or Tru-Sharp surgical stainless steel (SS), depending on the specific model produced.
- Handle: The handle is made of jigged bovine bone, often referred to by collectors as "redbone" due to its reddish color.
- Tang Stamp: The period of 1965-1969 is specifically identified by the "Case XX USA"stamp with no dots below the "USA". (In 1970, Case introduced a dot system for dating, starting with 10 dots, so the absence of dots indicates the 1965-1969 era).
- Construction: The knife features brass liners and nickel silver bolsters. The blades are known for having good "snap" (a solid feel when opening and closing).
- Condition is Excellent , minor patina consistent with age, see chart below
NKCA Grading system
MINT: A factory fresh knife, absolutely original as it came from the manufacturer, not carried or sharpened, a perfect knife.
NEAR MINT: A new knife that has seen sometimes, show some slight carry or shop wear, blades snap perfectly, handles show no cracks.
EXCELLENT: Shows no more than 10% blade wear, handles are sound, no cracks, blades snap good.
VERY GOOD: About 25% blade wear, slight cracks in handles, may have one lazy blade, stamping clearly visible to the naked eye, no blades changed or repaired.
FAIR: 50% blade wear, blades lazy, cracks and chips in handles, handles replaced with same type, blades repaired, stampings faint but readable with a glass.
POOR: Blades very worn, handles bad or missing, blades have been replaced with the same type, reading of the stamp is almost impossible, even with a glass, good mostly only for parts.
