Bill Benton Clip Point Hunter ~ Vintage 1980`s ~ Rare
Bill Benton Custom Knives, a well-regarded custom knife maker known for his high-quality craftsmanship during the "golden age" of custom knives in the 1980`s.
- Maker:
Bill Benton (sometimes referred to as William Benton) was active in the custom knife community during this era. - Materials: Following 1980s industry standards, his knives often utilized high-performance stainless steels like 440C or the then-emerging ATS-34. Handles frequently featured premium materials such as Sambar stag, exotic woods, Micarta or occasionally ivory (prior to late-80s trade restrictions).
- Styles: He was known for functional yet elegant hunting knives, fixed blades, and occasionally folding knives. Many custom makers of this period focused on mirror-polished finishes and "hollow ground" blades.
- Maker's Mark: Look for a stamped or etched signature on the blade, typically reading "BENTON" or "B. Benton".
- Blade Style: Features a Clip Point profile, a versatile design often used for hunting and field tasks. The blade typically has a sharp "clipped" tip for precision work and a belly for slicing.
- Handle Material: Constructed with Micarta scales. Micarta was a popular high-performance material in the 1980s for its durability, moisture resistance, and reliable grip in wet conditions.
- 8-Pin Construction: A standout feature of this model is the use of eight pins (often brass or stainless steel) to secure the Micarta scales to the full tang of the knife. This high number of pins is a signature stylistic and structural choice for Benton's vintage hunters, providing exceptional stability.
- Era: These knives were handcrafted during the 1980s, a period noted for the growth of the custom knife-making industry and the use of modern synthetics like Micarta in traditional patterns.
- Build: Typically features a full-tang design for strength, making it a robust tool for outdoor and survival use.
