Benchmade 440 Opportunist ~ Osborne Design ~ Vintage

The Benchmade 440 Opportunist is a highly collectible, discontinued gentleman's folding knife designed by the legendary custom knifemaker Warren Osborne. It was first introduced to the market in 2004 and went into full production starting in 2005.

 Description & Design

The Benchmade Opportunist was designed as a slender, lightweight "gentleman’s carry" suited for formal or office settings, fitting discreetly into slacks or khakis without being bulky.
  • The Blade: It features a modified Wharncliffe style blade crafted from premium CPM-S30V stainless steel, known for its exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance. The blade operates manually using a right-handed thumb stud.
  • The Handle: The handle frame is built from 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum with a machined jig-pattern texture. It is distinctively accented with stabilized real wood onlays on the sides and features matching wood backspacers, combining a modern framework with a classic aesthetic.
  • Locking Mechanism: It utilizes a secure, modified stainless steel liner lock framework.
  • Carry Styles: Note for collectors: The original production versions did not include a pocket clip. Later production iterations introduced a removable, tip-down silver split-arrow pocket clip for deep-pocket carry.
