Amherst Cutlery Stag Small Hunter ~ RARE !
Although the slip joint folders were the usual knives made by Amherst , We have acquired a few very rare , small fix blade knives, probably a special custom order for one of their customers.
This one has a Stag handle, brass guard, with a pommel that may be stone or some type of bone. it measures 7 1/8" OAL with a 2 3/4" blade. Comes with a leather sheath.
Amherst Cutlery produced high-quality, American-made handmade stag slip joint folders, featuring premium steel (154CM or D2), genuine Amber or Sambar stag handles, and stainless steel bolsters. These traditional knives, such as the Gent’s folder, are often finished with hand-rubbed satin blades, secure back-springs, and exceptional fit and finish.
These knives are considered premium EDC (Everyday Carry) options, blending traditional styling with modern materials and craftsmanship.
Features and Description of Amherst Stag Fixed Blades:
- Maker: Handmade by Tim Balda of Amherst Cutlery.
- Blade Material: Usually 154CM or D2 stainless steel, known for edge retention and durability.
- Handle Material: Genuine Amber stag or Sambar stag antler, offering a unique, textured, and ergonomic grip.
Amherst Cutlery was a short-lived but highly regarded manufacturer of traditional folding pocket knives based in Amherst, Ohio, active primarily in the mid-to-late 2000s.
Historical Details:
- Establishment & Philosophy: The company was founded with a mission to produce premium, semi-custom traditional knives that combined modern production efficiency with the high-end materials typically found in custom knives. They were well-known for using exotic handle materials, such as ivory, stag, and rare hardwoods.
- Production Style: Amherst Cutlery specialized in classic American patterns like Barlows, Trappers, and Muskrat knives. Unlike mass-market brands, their production runs were often small and focused on high-fit-and-finish standards.
- Collaborations: The company often sourced blade steel and initial frame construction from other high-quality manufacturers—most notably Queen Cutlery in Titusville, PA—before completing the detailed finishing and handle work in-house.
- Dissolution: Amherst Cutlery ceased operations roughly around 2009-2010. Following the closure, some of its equipment and inventory were reportedly absorbed or liquidated, and the knives have since become sought-after items for collectors of traditional slipjoints
